Sports Agenda For Tuesday (5/24/11)
Big Story:
It's election day here in Miami-Dade County, but all eyes will be on a different race tonight as the Heat look to take hold of the Eastern Conference Finals and go up 3-1 over Da Bulls.
Plus, the Marlins look to start off their West Coast road trip with a victory and keep pace with the Phillies.
So like Charles Barkley in front of the Miami fans, let's stick our middle finger in the air and dive into the agenda.
Miami Heat: (vs. Chicago Bulls, Game 4, 8:30 p.m., TNT)
If you listen to the Heat players and coaches, it's all about the next game. For Da Bulls, it's all about this game because if they can't pull out a victory tonight on the Heat's home court, then this series is over.
So what do the Bulls have to do tonight to knock out the Heat at the AAA?
It's not really a simple equation for the Bulls.
First, they have to find a way to get Derrick Rose into the open court early and often. Rose has been his most lethal when he's able to accelerate and create plays either off the break or slashing to the basket. With the Bulls able to rebound the ball so well, it's often just a wild throw at the backboard and Chicago takes their chances on trying to get second-chance points.
Well, that's not good enough against this Heat team. With Udonis Haslem giving the Heat a physical/athletic presence under the basket, the Heat can get after the Bulls' best rebounders and cut those second chance points down to a manageable number.
So that's the Bulls' first problem.
Next, the Bulls have to find a way to keep LeBron and D-Wade from creating plays. That's easier said than done. Unlike Rose, both James and Wade are slashers and can open up the lane for each other. Plus, if you overcommit to either, they can both make the tough pass to an open teammate and force the defense to rotate too far and leave someone wide-open for a shot or dunk.
The Bulls also have to take the crowd out of the game. As Charles Barkley can attest, the Heat fans can be a rowdy bunch and if they get going the Bulls are going to have a tough time overcoming it.
Finally, the Bulls have to hope that all three of the Big Three have an off game. So far, Chris Bosh has been eating the Bulls like a fat kid in a McDonald's. He's feasted on the Bulls defense and LeBron and D-Wade have been happy to feed the beast. But, if the Bulls decide to shutdown Bosh, they run the risk of LeBron or Wade getting hot and the Bulls can't do that if they hope to stay in the game.
Look, the Bulls are a very good defensive team. They've held the Big Three relatively in check during the first 3 games. In fact, it was only a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter of Game 3 that finally broke it open for the Heat. The Heat have not played a complete game against the Bulls yet. And while LeBron and Wade are happy to feed Bosh, eventually they are going to get theirs and go for 25-30 each, that's when the Heat will be the most deadly.
The Bulls are more than capable of winning tonight, but they're still very young and missing the championship moxie needed to move on to the NBA Finals.
It's still anyone's game, but based on body language and facial expressions after Game 3, the Bulls are frustrated, tired, and out of answers for Miami's defense.
We'll find out if they have anything left in the tank tonight, or if the Heat are ready to close the door and take the Eastern Conference title.
Remember, a Heat loss tonight and the series is 2-2 headed back to Chicago. This is a must-win for the Heat if they want to capture the series without going to 7 games in the series.
One final note, yknow Tom Thibodeau won coach of the year as the Bulls pulled off a great turnaround. But how about a tip of the hat to Erik Spoelstra. He's gone from persona non grata in November, to coaching his tail off in the Heat's playoff run. Yes, he has great talent, but so did Phil Jackson. If Spo can lead the Heat to a title this year, it will be one of the great coaching jobs in recent memory. Even if he only gets them to the Finals, it's still a hell of an accomplishment given the state of the team in November and having to meld the Big Three into a cohesive unit.
Florida Marlins: (@ San Francisco Giants, 10:15 p.m.)
The Marlins head out west for a road trip starting tonight in San Francisco. The Fish are looking to keep pace with the Phillies, who have pulled out to a 2 game lead over the Marlins and 4 game lead over the Atlanta Braves.
Tonight, the Fish toss out Ricky Nolasco who is 3-0 3.32 ERA but he has been tagged for 7 home runs in his 9 starts. But, his strikeout to walk ratio is better than 4-1 so he's at least mowing down most of the batters.
It will also be a homecoming of sorts for Mike Stanton who is from the West Coast. He currently leads the Marlins with 10 home runs and is second on the team with 23 RBI's. So he'll be looking to perform well for his home state.
