Sports Agenda For Tuesday (5/10/11)
Big Story:
Celtics. Are. Done.
It's as easy as that. The Celtics are gassed, they're old, they simply can't match up athlete for athlete with the Heat. Miami took Boston's best shot last night and still came out ahead. More on that later.
Also, the Fish dropped another game behind the Phillies with Monday night's loss and the NFL remains in legal limbo.
Let's break us off some of the agenda.
Heat: (off, Game 5 vs. Celtics Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.)
To start, let's get this out of the way. The Miami Heat, the team that can't win in the final minutes, the team that can't win the close games, and the team that couldn't win in the end against the Celtics. Yeah, all that from the national media, especially ESPN….how's that crow taste today?
Didn't hear much from Bill Simmons, guess he was at the Red Sox game.
LeBron played out of his mind last night on his way to 35 points and 14 rebounds. Yes, he turned it over near the end, but he played phenomenally throughout the game, especially in the fourth quarter.
Was it not fun to watch LeBron bury the three pointer and watch the entire crowd just completely lose all of their air? LeBron buried that with the Celtics bench yelling at him trying to get in his head. Advantage LeBron.
Considering the way the refs were calling the game through three quarters, I was amazed that LeBron and Dwyane Wade could keep attacking, but they did.
Wade and LeBron combined to miss 2 of 23 free throws, not bad eh.
Also, Chris Bosh apparently arrived at the arena in the fourth quarter. He played well down the stretch and had 20 and 12 for the game. I think he's a breath of fresh air from the normal athlete who isn't capable of saying anything. He struggles, he admits it, etc.
By the way, Bosh has gotten a lot of slack in this series, but Kevin Garnett has been effectively neutralized outside of Game 3, and Bosh has plenty to do with that, along with Joel Anthony.
Personally, I want to see how the AAA crowd reacts when Udonis Haslem enters the game during Game 5 against the Celtics.
The Celtics had a nice run, but it's now officially over.
The only question is will the Celtics show more class in losing than the L.A. Lakers?
Kudos to Rajon Rondo for playing through that kind of pain, that was some impressive guts from the Celtics catalyst.
And….here's Shaq's box score from last night…..3:31 played, 2 fouls, no rebounds, no points.
Marlins: (vs. Phillies, 7:10 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
If you like the Marlins, or baseball in general, you HAVE to head out to Sun Life Stadium tonight!
The Marlins are playing the Phillies, but the matchup of pitchers is second to none. The Marlins will toss ace Josh Johnson against the Phillies ace, Roy Halladay.
It's the equivalent of watching Kobe play LeBron or seeing Peyton Manning against the Patriots.
Johnson is coming off his first loss of the season, which saw his ERA jump from 0.88 to 1.68. Halladay won his last start and currently has an ERA of 2.19.
Seriously, you're not going to find a better pitching matchup anywhere in baseball. Period.
But, the Marlins bats have to come alive eventually or even the greatest pitchers in the world can't propel the Marlins to victory. The Fish have lost 4 of their last 5 including last night's 6-4 loss to the Phillies. Last night's game can be attributed to bad pitching (read: Javier Vazquez).
But, the Marlins have a potential all-star in Gaby Sanchez, and if Hanley Ramirez ever starts hitting, the Fish will have quite a one-two punch at the 3 and 4 spot in the lineup.
Vazquez really needs to stop. He gave up all of the Marlins runs in just 4 1/3 innings pitched. The Marlins bullpen came in and pitched a 3 hit shutout the rest of the way, but when you're that far behind, it's tough to catch up against the Phillies lineup.
NFL Update:
The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals is moving with all the speed of a slug on a xanax bender. So, the entire NFL is in limbo and no one knows what to do or what will happen. As I reported yesterday, the NFL is putting together new rules if the Appeals Court sides with the players, but the rules are not known right now and if the NFL wins on appeal, they will never be known.
Also, the NFLPA went back to Judge Doty in a separate case to keep the NFL from receiving television money, and has now asked for another $1 billion from the league's advertising revenue because the player's feel the NFL negotiated deals knowing there would be a lockout and therefore were acting in bad faith. The Players already won once, so don't be surprised if they win again.
The league has put all its marbles in an obscure 1932 law that escapes my mind right now, but essentially it forbids the courts from getting involved in labor disputes.
So the NFL is reduced now to talking about legal strategy instead of strategizing how to beat the 3-4 defense with the passing game.
Guh.
