Sports Agenda For Tuesday (3/1/11)

Big Story:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. That describes the season for the Miami Heat and the Florida Panthers. The Heat are set to make a few roster moves in hopes of getting the right group of guys together for the playoff stretch run. The Heat are interested in two guys, Mike Bibby and Troy Murphy. More on them in a bit.

The Panthers…well, they conducted the annual fire sale of the roster. They ditched Radek Dvorak and Dennis Wideman for some magic beans and a six-pack of beer. Not exactly, but you catch my drift.

Since it's March, that means two things: Spring Training games are now in session, and the NFL Draft is right around the corner.

Let's dive in to the agenda!

Heat:
The Heat are enjoying a much needed few days off before they hit murderer's row in their schedule. Their next five games include games against the Magic, Lakers, Spurs, and Trail Blazers. In other words…ouch!

But, help could be on the way to the Heat roster. The team is reportedly the leader to land point guard Mike Bibby, who was bought out by the Washington Wizards Monday afternoon. The Heat are also finalists for Troy Murphy, who was bought out Monday as well.

Both guys could help the roster plug some holes. Neither will be the magic bullet to cure the Heat's ills, but Bibby can hit the three and Murphy will go for the rebound and give Bosh a little rest.

Don't count out Corey Brewer either. He's not much offensively, but he's a beast on the defensive end of the floor. He's long and can really cause headaches for opposing team's wing players.

Panthers: @ Hurricanes (7:00 p.m. Fox Sports)
The Florida Panthers stink. It's as simple as that. If you want proof, look at the dumping of talent and salaries completed yesterday. They dumped two solid players in Dvorak and Wideman for draft picks and some other scrubs.

So they've given up on this season, but you can still watch some good hockey at the Bank Atlantic Center…of course it will be played by the Panthers' opponents, but if you're bored…there's plenty of seats available.

Also, the Panthers will be having die hard night at the arena…free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Panthers made it past the first round in the NHL playoffs. (I kid, but a great line from Major League)

NFL Labor Update:
Much ado about nothing right now. Negotiations with the mediator will likely end today or tomorrow and then the lockout begins.

The league said it will try to lockout players even if the union decertifies.

At that point, the courts will begin to get involved and the whole thing could blow up like we haven't seen since 1987.

Congratulations NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith….for not having the brains to keep labor peace between the two sides of the most popular sport in the country. Way to go guys!.....ya jerks!

NFL Draft:
Well, believe it or not, the NFL Draft will still go on as scheduled.

The biggest risers so far are Marcel Darius of Alabama, Julio Jones of Alabama, and Stephen Paea of Oregon State.

Darius is looking like a possible number one overall pick, while Jones ran a 4.39 on a broken foot at the combine and Paea only bench pressed 225 pounds 49 times, setting a combine record.

Darius can play in either the 3-4 or 4-3, so his versatility will make him appeal to many teams. Jones is simply a beast who loves to run block as well as burn down the field. Paea is a short, fat, strong defensive tackle who loves to eat up blockers and stuff the run.

The Dolphins don't need any of them, so don't get excited. But with Darius moving up draft boards and Jones certain to skyrocket up boards, it means some players could drop.

I'm telling you, one player the Dolphins could draft and have an absolute monster on the defensive side of the ball is Aldon Smith. It's not cause I'm a Missouri homer, I am, but it's because as a 3-4 outside linebacker, he has the skills and speed of DeMarcus Ware. Yes, I said it.

Still, the Dolphins will likely look at the interior offensive line, tight end, and running back position in the draft.

I could tell you a lot more about who the Fins would target…if a CBA was done and free agency had started.

Marlins: @ St. Louis Cardinals (1:05 p.m.)
No television for the Marlins, I'm shocked.

They did pound the Cards good to start off the spring training baseball schedule, so they've got that going for them.

I'm thinking the Marlins won't be terrible, but they're still at least a year and several players away from competing with the Phillies.
