Sports Agenda For Thursday (5/26/11)
Big Story:
Is it party time in Miami yet? Not quite, but they're starting to get the confetti ready to celebrate being champion of the Eastern Conference.
Of course, if the Heat celebrate winning the Eastern Conference, Charles Barkley will have a problem with it.
So we'll get into the Heat and Game 5, plus Ric Bucher of ESPN continues to jump off the deep end with no water in the pool, the Marlins win again, and Roger Goodell…yeah, give me a minute to think of the best analogy for him.
Let's hit the agenda harder than Rick Scott's poll numbers.
Heat: (@ Chicago, Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, 8:30 p.m., TNT)
The Heat are looking to close out the Chicago Bulls on the road tonight. It's going to be a tough out for the Heat as the Bulls will give them everything they've got, but I'm just not convinced they have anything left in the tank.
If you watched Game 4, and if you didn't…shame on you, the Bulls just ran out of gas at the end. As Dwyane Wade and LeBron James were diving for the ball and blocking shots, the Bulls were going through the motions.
And, if you've watched the series, you understand that the real NBA MVP doesn't play for the Bulls, his name is LeBron James.
I'll get into this more in a story on CBSMiami.com's sports page today (cheap plug), but LeBron has shut down and embarrassed Derrick Rose, especially in the fourth quarter during this series.
Even Rose himself said it's hard to compete when you have a guy 6'8, 260 pounds moving faster than you are to defend you. Truer words haven't been spoken.
I am a little concerned about Dwyane Wade. He says he's just dealing with the normal wear and tear issues of a season, but he didn't have his trademark lift in Game 4 and just seemed off. He went 2 hours without a field goal, which for someone as good as him, is the equivalent of Peyton Manning not completing a pass for 3 quarters.
Wade should bounce back tonight, but it's imperative for the Heat to win either tonight or Saturday night to get this series over with and have a few days to rest Wade for the NBA Finals run.
It's an argument, but I'd say the Eastern Conference Finals MVP should be a tie with Chris Bosh and LeBron, Bosh for his offense and LeBron for his defense.
Still, you should check out the article I put up yesterday on the Sports page about Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem, the forgotten men who have come up big in the playoffs. Click here to read it!
So what should you look for in tonight's game?
Well, I expect the Bulls to come out hot and give it everything they've got in the first quarter. Their biggest chance is if they can pull out so far ahead of the Heat the Heat can't come back. But, for the Bulls to get going, Derrick Rose has to do better than 8-27 from the field with 7 turnovers.
Rose needs to hit about 15-25 with 5 or fewer turnovers for the Bulls to have a chance.
But, being guarded by LeBron and Wade will make Rose's job even tougher again tonight.
I think for Wade, he really wants to come out and have a great game to close out the Bulls in his hometown. Chicago really turned against him when he refused to come play for the Bulls last July, so it would be bittersweet for him.
I think the Heat will win tonight simply because I think the Bulls are overmatched physically and emotionally.
That said, I think the Bulls will be back in the Finals sooner rather than later. The team will overhaul the roster to try and get Rose a dependable second option as his running mate. Think of it as his Scottie Pippen.
But, on the subject of Rose…can someone please smack Ric Bucher upside the head for being an idiot.
He's still bantering on about Rose being the best player in the NBA. Really? Dude, have you watched this series? There's only one best player in the NBA and he suits up for the Heat wearing number 6. Seriously, Bucher was ranting that Rose played a great game in Game 4 and so forth.
If 8-27 from the floor and 7 turnovers makes you the best player in the NBA…someone call up, hmmm, I don't know, um, Kyle Korver because he must be a hall of famer.
Marlins: (@ San Francisco Giants, 3:45 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
It was an ugly game in San Francisco last night with the Marlins pulling out a 7-6 victory in extra innings.
Most of what you will see is Giants catcher Buster Posey getting demolished by Bonafacio. Click here to see it.
Nevertheless, the Marlins ran their record to 28-19 for the season and kept pace with the Phillies who won in 19 innings over the Reds.
Marlins fans have to be happy with Gaby Sanchez and Logan Morrison just crushing the ball. And speaking of crushing the ball, have you seen Mike Stanton?
The 21-year-old phenom is just murdering the ball for the Fish and it's just fun to watch him play.
Chris Volstad was one of 8 pitchers for the Fish last night and gave up 2 earned runs to run his ERA to 5.40 for the season.
Today, the Marlins throw up Anibal Sanchez and his 3-1 record against Vogelsong for the Giants in an afternoon tilt in San Francisco.
NFL Update:
So Roger Goodell got up yesterday and said essentially that fans are starting to turn against the NFL and the players.
You think?
That's some breaking news from Captain Obvious. In other news, water is wet, the sky is blue, and bears take dumps in the woods.
Seriously, Goodell and DeMaurice Smith need to just shut up. Both of them say more insane things by the day and both are doing more to hurt the NFL than any performance enhancing drugs, concussions, vicious hits, or anything else out there.
So please, until you guys are ready to announce a new CBA and football is starting up again…please SHUT UP!!!!
