Sports Agenda For Thursday (1/29/12)
Big Story:
The Los Angeles Lakers pay a visit to Miami this evening; the Panthers keep losing, and the Dolphins keep bumbling the head coaching hire.
When my poll numbers surge it's because we talk about…more sports!
Miami Heat: (vs. Los Angeles Lakers, 8:00 p.m., TNT)
The Miami Heat welcome in the Lakers tonight in what should be an epic matchup between the top two scorers in the NBA.
For the Lakers, Kobe Bryant has been lighting teams up all season long.
He'll be facing LeBron James, who has suddenly started showing more glimpses of the player the Heat knew he had in him.
Kobe leads the NBA in scoring at 30.8 points per game versus LeBron's 29.8 points per game.
But, Kobe is having to jack up around 25 shots a game to get his points, while LeBron is shooting 58 percent from the field.
Here's why I think the Heat have a big advantage over the Lakers tonight.
Outside of Kobe, the only decent players on the Lakers are Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.
Both are slower players who will get worn out quickly by the Heat's spread offense.
What I'll be interested in seeing is if LeBron will be guarding Kobe.
It will happen eventually, but I want to see if Kobe and his experimental treatments can school LeBron.
Looking at the Heat's roster, Mike Miller will again play tonight as he tries to build on his 18 point outing in his first game back.
Plus, the big Enigma may finally get on the court.
Eddy Curry was told he could possibly play tonight, which makes sense given the Lakers' size with Bynum and Gasol both being 7-feet tall.
Curry, who probably still weighs around 295-310, may be able to get in and bang his big body against Bynum enough to rattle him.
Oh the story lines tonight!
Pay special attention to the foul trouble Gasol or Bynum could find themselves in.
If LeBron and Bosh continue to drive to the basket, the Lakers will have to foul.
Hopefully, LeBron doesn't settle for 20-foot jumpers and instead backs down in the post and makes the Lakers foul him.
If you have any extra tickets….I'm available! Ha!
Panthers: (next game, Friday 8:30 p.m. @Chicago Blackhawks)
Well, the Panthers' fall is about complete.
They have continued to flail away in January and have now fallen into a tie with the Washington Capitals in the Southeast Division.
Last night, the Panthers lost again in overtime, this time to the Colorado Avalanche.
Now, the Panthers have to travel to Chicago to take on arguably the NHL's best team, the Chicago Blackhawks.
Ouch.
If the playoffs started today, the Panthers would be in by the skin of their teeth.
Here's an interesting stat that popped out at me this morning.
Florida's played in the most overtime games of any team in the NHL this season.
Now if they could only win those games, they'd finally be on the right track.
It is eerie how much they resemble last year's Florida Marlins team.
Let's see if they suffer the same fate or if they can right the proverbial ship.
Dolphins:
My neighbors keep asking me, who's the next Dolphins head coach?!?!!
I have to tell them, my honest answer is I have no idea.
My gut tells me it will be Joe Philbin of the Packers.
But, my head is telling me it may just be Todd Bowles.
Think about it…
Stephen Ross can have a press conference announcing it and say, "no matter where we looked, we kept coming back to our guy."
Plus, hiring a minority coach may be the only way Ross saves face in the fiasco he started.
The Phins will have to make a quick decision on the quarterback position as well.
They will have to either mortgage the farm and trade up to get RGIII, or suffer another season in anonymity without a franchise quarterback.
