Sports Agenda For Thursday (1/12/11)

Big Story:
Another night, another Heat loss and LeBron and Wade both failed in the fourth quarter. Plus, it's Jeff Fisher watch, day 13, for the Dolphins.
When LeBron bricks a fourth quarter shot, I think of….more sports.

Dolphins Coaching Search:
Ah, what a day of convoluted mess Wednesday was.
It started out when NBC6 reporter Jeff Burnside tweeted that the Dolphins were hiring Fisher and a press conference would happen in the afternoon.
Not too long after that, a Channel 5 reporter in West Palm Beach tweeted the same thing and said she heard it on ESPN radio.
So, I did what any rational person would do…I went to ESPN Radio online and the ESPN Radio affiliate in West Palm Beach.
It just so happened that ESPN's NFL insider Chris Mortensen was on the air and said that Fisher had not decided on a destination yet.
Then the West Palm Beach affiliate tweeted that they made no such announcement on the air.
In other words, Burnside and the Channel 5 reporter swung for the fences and hit a giant FAIL!
Burnside credited NBC6's Joe Rose with the scoop, so Joe Rose….a giant FAIL for you too!
Now, onto the actual coaching search.
Fisher is legitimately torn between the two jobs, which tells me a couple of things.
First, Miami is offering the most cash and Fisher is trying to squeeze more out of St. Louis.
Second, I'm not sure that he'll ever be fully sold on either team, based on his current actions.
Look, in St. Louis he has a franchise quarterback and a few defensive pieces, but he'll have to overhaul the whole roster.
He'll have plenty of salary cap space to work with in St. Louis, but building an NFL team through free agency is a recipe for disaster, unless you're Bill Belichick.
He'll also have the number two overall draft pick to either take RGIII or send to the highest bidder for a passel of picks.
In Miami, he'd have a much more talented overall roster and a serviceable quarterback.
The defense is almost ready-built and the offense can succeed with a few subtle changes and additions on the offensive line.
Plus, no income tax and perfect weather year round.
But, remember this…
Fisher is a southern California guy. He went to USC after all. If the Rams were seriously contemplating moving to Los Angeles, he would in effect be going home.
While moving a team is a massive undertaking, he could build the team now for the possible move to mitigate the toughness of the move.
He did it before, with a tight-fisted owner, and it was incredibly difficult. So he may not be willing to do that again.
It's also likely that the Fins have their next coach already lined up and ready to go if Fisher walks.
Hopefully, it's not Dave Toub…a special teams coach.
Fins fans better keep their fingers crossed that money talks and Fisher brings his talents to South Florida soon.

Miami Heat: (off Thursday, next game Friday, 10:30 p.m. vs. Denver)
Hmmm, LeBron James goes cold in the fourth quarter as the pressure mounts and the Heat lose.
No, I'm not talking about the NBA Finals. That's the formula for the last two games, both of which are losses.
I'm not saying that the Heat are in trouble; but they seemed to revert back to their 2011 self several times in the last two games.
I did like that LeBron was going hard to the basket in the fourth quarter last night. Eventually those shots will go down.
LeBron, Bosh, and Wade all struggled from the field last night as the team shot just 40 percent from the field.
Memo to Chris Bosh, yes we know you can shoot the three, but don't do it until the end of the game please when you're a deadeye from out there.
But last night, we saw the difference a star point guard can make.
Chris Paul had 27 points, 11 assists, and 6 rebounds. Chalmers did his best, but could only manage 18 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.
Plus, the Heat played the starters way too many minutes last night in the second game of a back-to-back.
James Jones, Terrel Harris, and Pittman never made an appearance.
The Heat are still 8-3 on the season, but now face adversity for the first time.
It's still a question of consistency from the team and they have to close out games as strong as they start them many nights.
The killer instinct in the fourth quarter, say like Kobe Bryant has, is the only thing missing from this team.
And you simply can't shoot 59 percent from the free throw line and expect to win in the NBA.
LeBron was the main culprit missing 8 free throws. It's a simple thing, that for the life of me, I've never understood why NBA players usually do it so poorly.
Well, except Shaq, who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the free throw line.
Don't panic Heat fans, but keep an eye on what adjustments are made and needed, especially when Mike Miller comes back and Eddy Curry finally joins the lineup.

Florida Panthers: (off until Friday)
Marlins: (out of season, and most likely done in free agency)

College Basketball:
There's really nothing to write about South Florida teams in college basketball.
No South Florida teams are even receiving votes in the top 25 from either the AP or the Coaches.

Be ready, college football signing day is coming up in roughly three weeks and it looks like all of the Big Three schools in Florida have stellar classes. I'll talk about them more as signing day approaches.
