Several Dolphins Players Have New Numbers

DAVIE (CBSMiami) – With the NFL Preseason now a thing of the past, teams around the league have finalized their 53-man rosters after being allowed up to 90 players during the months leading up to the regular season.

Over 700 players were cut last weekend when teams had to go from 75 down to 53. That means each team had to get rid of 22 players, giving the ones who made the final cut the option to change their jersey numbers if they so choose.

It's not uncommon for rookies or late addition free agents to take numbers that aren't their desired choice simply because the ones they normally use aren't available.

That will sometimes change once the final rosters are named, giving these new players a chance to select a number that they either used in college or just an option they like better based on the NFL numbering system.

The Miami Dolphins 53-man roster features 11 rookies and several new free agents, and once the final cuts were made there were several players who wanted to upgrade their jersey number.

Here are the new changes:

Ja'Wuan James has changed his number to 70 (previously wore #72)
Samson Satele has changed his number to 64 (previously wore #69)
Shelley Smith has changed his number to 66 (previously wore #64)
Dallas Thomas has changed his number to 63 (previously wore #70)
Damien Williams has changed his number to 34 (previously wore #5)
Orleans Darkwa has changed his number to 32 (previously wore #3)
Chris McCain has changed his number to 58 (previously wore #47)

Recent free-agent signings:

Sammy Seamster will wear number 37
Brandian Ross will wear number 33
