Report: Florida Students Don't Know Much About Science

TALLAHASSEE - (CBS4) - Florida students are severely lacking in their knowledge of basic science, according to findings from a 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress report.

The report also known as the Nation's Report Card released its findings Tuesday, which stated that fewer than half of Florida fourth and eighth graders are proficient in science. Florida's fourth graders scored about two points higher than the national average. Eighth graders, on the other hand, scored three points lower than the national average.

About 32 percent of Florida fourth graders and 24 percent of eighth graders scored at a proficient level. Just under one percent reached the advanced range, the report stated.

The report also found that 68 percent of black eighth graders scored below skill level compared to 28 percent of whites.
