MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A man has got his neighbor to thank for saving his life when deadly gunfire erupted on their street.
It happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of NW 22nd Avenue and 66th Street.
"The guy who was shooting he was like, boom, boom, boom," said Taffany McCall.
McCall said it began when her 19-year-old son Demetric had gotten into a fight with a woman at a nearby store earlier in the day. The woman reportedly punched him. He told her "he ain't going to fight no girl, go get your best man," according to his stepfather who was in the store.
A short time later, McCall said two men pulled up to their home. There was a fist fight and it looked like Demetric was getting the upper hand.
"When my son punched the other guy and knocked him out, he got his gun," said McCall.
One of McCall's neighbors saw what was happening and got his family safely inside. He then got his own gun.
McCall said when her neighbor came back out, the gunman was pointing his gun at her.
"I just froze and that's when my neighbor said get down and the guy started shooting back at my neighbor and my neighbor returned fire," said McCall.
The gunman was killed. McCall's son and the second man in the car were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
"I'd give my life to Nick because if Nick wasn't there my son would've been dead," said McCall.
Police have not released the name of the man who died or said if charges will be filed.
