MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A car slammed into a Miami Police officer helping after a crash on I-95 sending him to the hospital early Thursday morning.

Miami Police said the officer was hit while he was in his patrol car around 4:30 a.m.

It is unclear if the driver of the car who crashed into the officer's vehicle is facing charges.

As of 9 a.m., the officer had been taken to Ryder Trauma Center and was expected to be heading home soon. He was described as being "banged up."

The officer was assisting in a traffic accident that happened near I-95 and 62nd Street.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash involving the officer.
