Off The Bubble: CBS Renews 14 Shows
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - If you were wondering about the status of your favorite CBS shows next season, the uncertainty is over. Wednesday CBS announced that 14 shows on its schedule would be back next year, an announcement that came weeks ahead of when most TV networks tell viewers what's staying and what's going.
One show that is not a lock is the re-tooled 2 and a Half Men, which subbed out Ashton Kutcher for Charlie Sheen when Sheen walked off the show, and then was fired. Discussions are said to be underway with producer Chuck Lorre and studio Warner Brothers about what happens next season.
If you like cop dramas, you'll love this lineup. Here are the shows you will definitely see next fall:
- Blue Bloods, the cop drama starring Tom Selleck.
- NCIS, the Navy-based crime show set in DC, and it's west coast counterpart, NCIS: LA. NCIS is the number one scripted show on television.
- Person Of Interest, which was given a second year.
- The Mentalist, starring Simon Baker, which will return for a 5th season.
- Criminal Minds, which will be back for an 8th season, survived even though this year's spinoff did not. There will be re-tooling as co-star Paget Brewster will leave the show after this season.
- The Good Wife has been an award-winning show, and is doing well as it enters it's 4th season
- The beautiful scenery and taut plots of Hawaii Five-O will help bring it back for a 3rd season. Book 'em, Dano.
- CSI: Crime Scene Investigation will be back after it survived major changes in the cast. However, nothing official for the Miami and NY-Based spinoffs.
Both "How I Met Your Mother" and "The Big Bang Theory" are expected to be back, but there has been no formal announcement yet as industry watchers say discussions are underway for the length of the renewal. But two CBS comedies did get the green light:
- 2 Broke Girls, the top rated new comedy of 2011, will be back again despite complaints about alleged racist and sexist themes. However, the show is a fan favorite.
- Mike and Molly, fresh off an Emmy win for co-star Melissa McCarthy, will be back for a third season.
CBS is heavily invested in "reality" shows, and that won't change.
Survivor, which is the reality-show grand-daddy, had already been renewed for next year. Joining it on the CBS schedule will be The Amazing Race, which is in its 21st season (the show has multiple seasons over a year), and Undercover Boss, which debuted following the 2010 Super Bowl and will enter its third season.
Rounding out the renewals, with no surprise, are the 44th season of 60 Minutes and the 24th season of 48 Hours Mystery.
To date, this means CBS has renewed 18 shows for 2012, but there are still some clouds in the prime-time firmament.
No mention has been made about the heavily promoted Rob, starring Rob Schneider, which debuted as a mid-season replacement. Rules of Engagement, which has been on and off the CBS schedule filling in holes here and there, has not been given the welcome back, yet. CSI: Miami, a CBS staple since 2002, has not been officially renewed, and CSI: New York is believed to be in danger of slipping off the schedule.
Almost certain not to be back, the victim of poor ratings is A Gifted Mind. However, there's been no death knell yet for the show.
