New Domain Names On The Horizon

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – If you were worried you'd never get to buy your favorite dot-com address, there's good news from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The group, which had up until Monday only allowed 22 suffixes like ".com" or ".edu," announced it will accept requests for almost any word in any language from January 12 to April 12, according to Bloomberg News.

That means internet addresses could end up with endings like ".southflorida," ".miamiheat" ".ibm," ".cbs," or even ".splurge."

But before making plans to buy up the dot-addresses of your favorite company, an application for a name will cost $185,000.

Icann had already approved the ".xxx" domain for adult websites in March, but the latest move has the potential to redefine how web names are constructed and how businesses market themselves.
