Mater Lakes Academy In NW Miami-Dade Calls School Threat 'Non-Credible'

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The wave of school threats continued on Wednesday.

During morning hours, students at Mater Lakes Academy hid in classrooms after a student reported, they overheard a verbal threat.

The charter school, which is separated into a middle school and high school, quickly worked with Miami-Dade Police to determine the threat wasn't credible.

Police say no guns or other weapons were found and the verbal statements made don't warrant criminal charges.

"They were saying a kid was going to kill the whole school," said Fabian Figura, a sixth grader at Mater Lakes Academy.

"What I heard is that he's going to shoot up the school, the 7th grader," said Melanie Vaca, a sophomore at Mater Lakes Academy.

Miami-Dade Police say two students were involved in the conversation. When they searched the school, no weapons were found.

"It's scary knowing a student could put a weapon in their book bag and no one knows who has what in their backpack. It's scary," said Mariah Vaca, a sophomore at Mater Lakes Academy.

Since the beginning of the school year, Miami-Dade Schools Police Department has investigated 40 threats and made six arrests. Twenty of those threats, happening within the last week.

"I was just going over with my stepdaughter earlier this week - what to do if there is ever an active shooter. You know, run, hide, fight mentality. Luckily, it didn't come to that today, but you never know," said Jorge Ginzo, a concerned parent.

Miami-Dade Police won't tell us what was said between the two young students, just that they won't face criminal charges. Police shared this warning on social media.

"Any person who communicates a threat to kill, to do great bodily injury or to do a mass shooting, commits a felony in the second degree, punishable by up to 50 years in prison," said Alvaro Zabaleta, a Detective with Miami-Dade Police Department.

The State Attorney's Office also weighing in, saying, "Threats made against a school are never jokes, are never funny, but are always crimes."

We've reached out to the school to see if the students will face any repercussions. We're told their parents are aware of everything that happened and were involved in conversations with both school officials and police.

There have been a number of school threats to Miami-Dade schools in the two weeks and six arrests have been made.
