FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Police are investigating an early-morning shooting that left a man dead in Fort Lauderdale.

When gunfire rang out in the Sistrunk neighborhood, Lubin Jean's mom got him out of bed.

"It was around 4:30 in the morning, my mom work me up and she told me I hear gunshots," Jean said.

His mom had the sickening feeling it was her cousin who had been shot.

He just walked out the door, on his way to work. Police identify him as Michel Jean Charles.

He got married in Haiti just 3 months ago. At first, Lubin couldn't see anything outside, then police arrived and shined their flashlight.

"He walked up to the body and flashed the light and I said 'mom, what did he have on when he walked out?' 'I don't know,' she said, 'I didn't' see.' 'I see his face, it's him on the ground,'" Lubin said.

According to a neighbor, it was a man passing in a tow truck who discovered the body.

It was at the same time another neighbor heard gunfire.

"I was in a deep sleep," recalled Zach Walter. "And about 3 gunshots and I woke up. And I was like, what was that?"

A lot of neighbors woke up from that gunfire.

Charles was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Many were stunned when they learned who was killed.

"Aw man," said Walter. "He was a nice guy. I actually spoke to him yesterday about football and life yesterday and the next morning, he's gone."

People in the neighborhood remember Charles as a kind man who was a hard worker.

"He's a very nice man," said neighbor Carla Roundtree. "He went to work every day. He's very nice to people, very friendly. I'm very shocked."

The killer is still at large.

Anyone with information are asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
