MIAMI — A police investigation is underway after a man was found shot and died following an apparent shooting at a Miami apartment complex late Saturday morning.

Around 11:54 a.m., Miami Police responded to the area of Northwest 4th Avenue and 8th Street in the neighborhood of Overtown to investigate a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Miami Fire Rescue was also called to the scene to treat the victim. Police confirmed later Saturday evening that he had died from his injuries.

CBS News Miami's Nikiya Carrero spoke with the victim's girlfriend's mother Juanita, who said she received a call from her daughter saying that someone was trying to steal her car while visiting her boyfriend right before shots rang out.

"She called me and told me 'Mami, Mami, Mami'" she said. "Crying, saying that her boyfriend got shot."

Juanita told Carrero that the victim — who she identified as Eduardo — went outside to start her daughter's car so she could head home. She said once outside, Eduardo found a man in the driver's seat, trying to steal the car — that's when the bullets began to fly.

"The boy had a weapon and he started shooting him," Juanita said. "He [shot] him five times."

Evidence markers were seen right next to the victim's girlfriend's car, which was riddled with bullet holes. People who lived in the area told Carrero that they were shocked and spooked by this shooting in broad daylight.

"I heard about 10-13 gunshots," a witness said. "And like I said is very dangerous because you have small children just ripping and running around and stuff like that, and like I said it is dangerous. It's like you can't be safe in your office and living without gun violence."

Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
