MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Various giveaways and the "tax-free holiday" in Florida are helping kids get prepared just in time for the start of the school year.

In Broward County, the families of military veterans lined at the William "Bill" Kling VA Center in Sunrise and got free backpacks, packed with school supplies and other items needed during the school year.

Volunteers passed out over 200 backpacks they filled using items donated by local businesses. Families that got a backpack had been chosen by a case worker to receive them.

In Miami-Dade County, City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and other local leaders provided Overtown residents with free book bags and school supplies.

The free event, held at Dorsey Park, had games, food, live entertainment and more giveaways.

In Opa Locka, the Trayvon Martin Foundation held its annual community back to school extravaganza at Hanan's Academic Development Center.

About 400 students, accompanied by their parents, were given backpacks and school supplies. For entertainment, there was also food, games, and music.

The events took place as Florida's back to school sales tax holiday is in full swing. During the 10-day sales tax-free holiday, shoppers don't have to pay sales tax on any clothes, shoes and certain accessories worth $100 or less, school supplies worth $15 or less or on the first $750 of a personal computer, when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use. It ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 16th.
