MIAMI (CBSMiami) – No one is questioning the move by the Miami Dolphins to fire offensive line coach Jim Turner in the wake of the Ted Wells report. But the Dolphins' firing of trainer Kevin O'Neill has at least one former Dolphins employee fired up.
"Dolphins fire Kevin O'Neill…unbelievable!" wrote former Dolphins head coach Jimmy Johnson. "O'Neill could not give info because of law. The BEST I ever worked with. Named NFL trainer of year."
Johnson continued his rant on Twitter writing, "All I can go on is experience..involved with football for 60 years &championship..O'Neill was best I was ever around. Trainers have info from Doctors that is confidential and they can not discuss."
In the Wells Report, O'Neill is alleged to have "even laughed at some of the racial insults" that were directed towards an assistant trainer on the team. In a separate incident in the report, O'Neill reportedly pulled Jonathan Martin aside and told him he was too nice and needed to stand up for himself more."
In addition, the Wells Report stated that O'Neil displayed hostility towards the investigators hired by Wells to interview the Dolphins staffers and team members.
But, while multiple levels of staffers and players have paid the price for either poor play on the field (Mike Sherman and Jeff Ireland) or being involved in the Wells Report (Richie Incognito, Jonathan Martin, John Jerry), head coach Joe Philbin has not received any punishment for being in charge of the entire situation.
