"Insidious: Chapter 2" Scares Up Paranormal Thrills
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – In Insidious: Chapter 2, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne reprise their roles as Josh and Renai Lambert, a husband and wife who seek to uncover the secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.
CBS4's Lisa Petrillo spoke with Wilson and Byrne about what in the script made them want to do a second one.
"I think with anything you want to find something that's different, what's fun about this one is I was able to show a few sides of me. That's part of the fun, we all want to play roles that are different for us," said Wilson.
In the original movie, the Lambert family was happily reunited after Josh went into the spirit world to get his son back. In the sequel, the paranormal events continue and become more and more terrifying.
Jason Blum, the man behind the mega-horror hits "Paranormal Activity" and "Saw" as well as the original Insidious, is back for Chapter 2.
When asked if he knew if the film was working in the shooting process, without any audience feedback, Blum said not really.
"You don't know. Sometimes you have a great shoot, you think you have the scariest movie on your hands, you screen it for a bunch of people and it totally falls flat. You really don't know until you screen it with a room full of strangers whether you have something good or you have a lot more work to do."
Lin Shaye returns as Elise Reiner, a specialist in the paranormal who the family seeks for help when strange things keep occurring.
"It's a good story, a wonderful story with a family presence so we felt we could carry it over to the next one," said Shaye. .
So what is the secret to a good scary movie?
"You want the audience to be very emotionally engaged in the actual story without the scares," said Blum. "So if you are on the edge of your seat about what is going to happen next before there is even a scare, when a scare occurs you're going to be way more scared."
Blum said although his horror films have done well, they've been relatively inexpensive to make.
"I really believe that horror does not do well by spending lots of money. The more money you spend on a horror movie, mostly it goes to special effects. I personally don't think special effects are very scary. i think it's real situations with real people, real demons you know are much scarier than CG stuff. So in this movie we try to keep our original and the sequels, which are slightly more expensive than the first, very, very low budget," said Blum.
Insidious: Chapter 2 opens this Friday.
