PALM BEACH (CBSMiami) – There is a troublesome new phone scam going around, and the con artist is posing as a law enforcement agent.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff Office, a man received a call on Friday from someone claiming to be Lt. Cross with PBSO.

The scammer told the victim a warrant was issued for his arrest for failing to attend jury duty.

The swindler then told the man he could resolve the case by paying a $5,555 fine.

The victim was instructed to purchase prepaid NetSpend Reloadit cards with a $500 value each and call (561) 232-8580 with the authorization number – after which the warrant would be released.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff Office says they never request payment over the phone.

If you have been victimized by a similar scam or know someone who has, you are urged to report it to your local law enforcement agency.
