Heat Focused And Ready For Regular Season Opener
MIAMI (CBS4) - The time for talking is just about over as the new Miami Heat are set to open the most anticipated regular season in team history. It's easy to say that because never before has the NBA seen an assortment of stars gathered in just one summer.
Heat superstar shooting guard Dwyane Wade had begged for years for the roster to be upgraded. As free agency opened over the summer, Heat president Pat Riley did it in a big way.
The first move was improving the front line by bringing in Chris Bosh to man the power forward position. But the coup de gras move came roughly a week into free agency when Riley did the unthinkable.
Riley proceeded to bag the biggest free agent out there in small forward LeBron James. The two-time reigning NBA-MVP decided to join Wade and Bosh and go after a title. His decision drew wide-spread scorn and made him persona non grata for most fans.
The reaction is driving James and Wade to what many expect to be an Eastern Conference title. But to get there, they will need some help from the rest of the team.
Riley used his remaining moves over the summer to bring in veterans to bolster the bench and give the team a rotation of big men. While most of the veterans are well past their prime, all they have to do is fill small roles and let Miami Thrice take the big shots.
The two positions that will be the most scrutinized will be the two positions that were unable to be truly addressed in free agency due to the salary cap, point guard and center.
Riley brought in Zydrunas Ilgauskas from the Cleveland Cavaliers to give a shooting presence to the center position. He also brought back undersized, but defensive-minded Joel Anthony. Topping off the roster at the 5 included veteran Jamaal Magloire and rookie second-round draft pick Dexter Pittman.
None of those players strike fear in opponents, but the Heat are likely hoping Dexter Pittman can develop over the long-term as a solid low-post presence.
Point guard could be the weakest position on the team. The Heat brought in Carlos Arroyo to run the point and he will be backed up by Mario Chalmers, who at this point is beginning to look like a bust as a point guard.
But the reality is that the center position and the point guard position just need to be slightly above average for this team to succeed. Wade and James can both run the point and both love to drive to the basket and distribute the ball or take the tough shot.
With Bosh an added scorer, teams will have to decide who to double-team when the Heat have the basketball. This is what the Heat hope for on the offensive end, but on the defensive end they will have a tough task guarding the Orlando Magic due to the dynamic ability of Magic center Dwight Howard.
That's where the Heat could use a tactic teams used to use against Shaquille O' Neal. The Heat can use Magloire and Howard to essentially "hack-a-Howard," and make Howard beat them from the free throw line.
The Heat starting lineup Tuesday night will be: Carlos Arroyo at the point; Dwyane Wade at shooting guard; LeBron James at small forward; Chris Bosh manning the power forward position; and Carlos Arroyo running the point.
