Good Samaritans Rescue Man Who Drove Into Biscayne Bay
MIAMI (CBS4) - When a car plunged into Biscayne Bay on Sunday evening, Francisco Abreu couldn't believe his eyes. He didn't hear the car splash into the water but from a nearby balcony he could see it sinking. That is when he alerted his friends.
"They didn't believe me at first," said Abreu. "After like a couple minutes of saying there's a car in the water they ran in the water to help the guy and I called the ambulances and the paramedics."
Five people from nearby apartments jumped into the bay to rescue an elderly man who had been behind the wheel.
"An older gentleman maybe 80, I don't know," recalled Andrew Truesdale. "I just jumped in. I saw someone else jump in. So I did just what anybody else would do if they saw. If I was in the water I'd want somebody else to jump in too. So that's what I did."
Truesdale and the others pulled the man to a nearby boat and immediately began life saving techniques.
"I began CPR I got him on the other boat and did CPR as long as I could until the paramedics came," said Truesdale.
The man was then rushed to the hospital, no word on his condition.
Miami Dade Police on the scene called it an accident and said they were not investigating.
