FORT LAUDERDALE — A Fort Lauderdale police officer who shot a man at a gas station on Sunday afternoon has been placed on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Fort Lauderdale police say around 3 p.m. they attempted a traffic stop on the 100 block of SW 27th Avenue, but the man behind the wheel didn't stop and eventually pulled into a Chevron gas station on W Davie Boulevard.

Surveillance video showed a gray Mercedes drive into the station followed by a black sedan. When the Mercedes pulled further up, armed officers jumped out of the black sedan and another car pulled up to the scene.

"Preliminary investigation reveals the driver exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a firearm. One FLPD officer discharged his weapon during that time, striking the suspect," said Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Bill Schultz.

Investigators said officers immediately rendered aid to the man, who was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he died.

It's still unclear what led to the initial attempted traffic stop before the shooting.

"In accordance with departmental policy, the officer is placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the initial investigation," said Chief Schultz.

Police have not released the identity of the man who was killed. No officers were injured. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
