Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announces new emergency management courses at colleges, universities

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made a stop at Florida International University in Miami on Wednesday morning to announce new emergency management courses that will soon be offered at several universities and colleges across the state.

Florida International University will be the first school to implement the program.

The program will create opportunities for students to participate in real-world disaster operations and see firsthand what it means to serve their communities.

"The goal is to create a strong workforce pipeline to be able to serve in emergency management, and that may mean you work for the state of Florida, the Division of Emergency Management, but it also may mean you can work for Miami-Dade County, or you could even work in the private sector because a lot of these private sector partners are heavily involved in emergency management," DeSantis said.

The Division of Emergency Management not only responds to natural disasters, like hurricanes, but it also responded to the Surfside condo collapse, evacuated residents from Israel after Oct. 7 and is helping with immigration enforcement.
