MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The world's first fully electric open-wheel racing series will race through the streets of Downtown Miami on Saturday.

The all-electric cars look similar to Indy race cars, but reach speeds of up to 150-miles per hours.

It's not only the first time the FIA Formula E Series is in Miami – but the first time an event is held on American soil.

"Miami is like a cross between Latin America, Europe, and the United State. So I think to bring Formula E to Miami, to start in Miami, it's a great match," said Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag.

These state of the art racers are the first electric powered single seat racing cars – meaning everything changes from the way you drive to those pivotal pit stops every driver must make.

"It takes too long to charge a battery – so we switch to a whole new battery and new car," said driver Scott Speed.

Michael Andretti of Andretti Autosport says fans "can vote for their favorite driver through Fanboost."

Fanboost – which is on each car – allows for fans to give their favorite driver a onetime boost of 40-50 more horsepower for eight seconds.

Meaning spectators can actually have a hand in the outcome.
