De la Renta was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2006. His doctor at Sloan Kettering in New York was Dr. Stephen Nimer who is now at Sylvester.

Dr. Nimer asked him to present his new line in Miami in the Spring as a fundraiser for Sylvester.

CBS4's Cynthia Demos had the opportunity to sit down with de la Renta when he was in South Florida. At that time, he said he had beaten cancer.  It is unclear if there was a return of the cancer or any issues with his cancer that led to his death.

Oscar de la Renta is from the Dominican Republic.

CBS4's Lisa Petrillo has interviewed Oscar de la Renta on more than one occasion during her career.

This is what she had to say about the fashion legend:

I  interviewed Oscar de la Renta a couple of times through the years.  Each time it was like waiting for royalty to enter the room. He WAS fashion royalty, the creme of  the crop, the epitome of elegance.

One might think the long and lean Dominican who dressed every A-lister from Jackie O, to Hillary Clinton,  to most recently Amal Clooney (he designed her wedding gown), would be stand-offish and intimidating. But, infact, he was anything but. He was warm and wonderful and joked with everyone in the room. He was even flirtatious and engaging and despite the fact that everyone wanted a piece of him, he would stop and smile, chat and pose for pictures.

I talked with him about his incredible career, and what fashion meant to him. He  wanted me to feel at ease and complimented me on what I was wearing. (Unfortunately for me, it wasn't Oscar.)  He told me how much he loved a woman's figure and that " the fit" means everything.   He wanted women to feel confident and beautiful in his clothes and he was most happy when he would see how thrilled his clients felt while wearing his designs. Oscar de la Renta was a one of a kind designer, a true gentlemen whose legacy is reflected in all things classic and beautiful.
