HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – One person is dead after a vehicle slammed into the wall of a building at a shopping center in Hollywood.
Home surveillance caught two cars racing on West Hollywood Boulevard just before 3 a.m.
Police said one of the drivers, 24-year-old David Paul-Lamour, lost control of his vehicle.
Investigators said Paul-Lamour's Cadillac hit a curb, knocked down some poles, went airborne and smashed into the rear of the Publix Supermarket at 1735 E. Young Circle.
"As you can see, this curve is pretty big, the circle starts here. There are signals that lead drivers coming from the beach with signs. There are also orange sticks with reflectors," said Hollywood police Lt. Osvaldo Perez.
"It was terrible, I've heard it so many times, I jumped out of bed, I know it was an accident but I really cannot see because the wall was blocking it," said Stephen Scott who lives nearby.
Paul-Lamour, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and pronounced deceased on the scene. His passenger, 20-year old Roxana Villa, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition.
Villa's sister said she doesn't know where she was or what she was doing before the crash. She told CBS4 her sister was dating Paul-Lamour on and off for about two years.
Joyce Newman, who also lives in the area, said more needs to be done to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
"This is the fourth car I've seen go through the building since I've been here," said Newman.
Police are looking into whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
