DAVIE (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins will have to continue their push towards a playoff spot without one of the team's key members.
Dolphins coach Adam Gase said on Monday that quarterback Ryan Tannehill has a sprain in his left ACL/MCL, not a tear that was originally thought.
"Better than what we thought yesterday," Gase said of the injury on Monday afternoon.
Tannehill suffered the injury during Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals.
The play happened in the third quarter when Cardinals defensive lineman Calias Campbell fell into Tannehill's knee.
"He handled yesterday about as well as you could," said Gase. "He got in about four fights in the locker room trying to get out to the field to watch the end of the game. He was better than what he was earlier and then now he's already back in here and trying to figure out what the next part of the process is for himself."
Plays like this have been called penalties and garnered fines in the past. No penalty was called on the field and it has yet to be determined if the NFL will take any action on Campbell.
Gase said that Tannehill's status for playing again this season is still unknown, but said that the quarterback will not require surgery "unless something changes."
"I have to find the timetable," Gase said. "We just have to go through all the details of everything. We're just making sure we're taking all the right steps."
Since being drafted in the first round of the 2012 draft, Tannehill has not missed a single game.
His streak of 77 consecutive starts will come to an end on Saturday night when Miami travels north to face the New York Jets.
That's when Matt Moore will take Tannehill's place as the Dolphins starting quarterback.
Whether that is the case for a week or for the rest of the season is something that we'll just have to wait and see.
Moore hasn't started a game since 2011. That year he took over an 0-4 Dolphins team that was struggling mightily under Chad Henne.
Miami finished that season with six wins in their final nine games after losing the first seven.
In those final nine games Moore had a passer rating of 97.8 while throwing 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions.
Of course, a lot of rust can build up in five years.
"I feel good, but clearly, there will be some [rust]," Moore said following Sunday's win. "I haven't done it in a while, but I don't know. I'm going in confident and feeling good.
"My focus right now is get ready to go. If I have to go, then be ready to go, and that's it. You talk about where we're at as a team, you can't ask for much more. The ball is in our court. We just have to execute and play one week at a time."
The Dolphins are still very much alive in the playoff race. They currently hold an 8-5 record, which is impressive in and of itself considering Miami began the season 1-4.
Currently the Dolphins are tied with the Denver Broncos for the final Wild Card spot, but Denver holds the tiebreaker thanks to a better win percentage in common games.
Miami's final three games are at the 4-9 Jets, at the 6-7 Bills and home for the 10-2 Patriots. The Broncos host the Patriots, play at the 10-3 Chiefs and finish the regular season at home against the 10-3 Raiders.
