Dolphins Camp 2012: Managing Gen. Partner Stephen Ross
(On if he enjoyed today's practice) – "Yeah, it was exciting to be here. You always can't wait for the first (practice) to get it started. I think it was a good day."
(On his expectations for the 2012 season and if sees it as a rebuilding year) – "I always look at every season as I want to win and that's really the only way I can look at it. It's great, it's kind of like a fresh start, but I think that we have a lot of, the coaching staff and all of the parts that they put together, I think I'm looking to win."
(On if it's disappointing to not have Ryan Tannehill at practice) – "Yeah, it's disappointing you know, but I look at the players who are there and dealt with that. I thought they looked pretty good."
(On if this team has playoff-caliber talent) – "I sure hope so."
(On if he is going to change the Dolphins logo) – "This year, no."
(On if he will change the logo next year) – "Next year is next year (laughing)."
(On how tough it is to watch practice because of the fast-paced tempo) – "I mean that's exciting. I think the fans really saw that. You could see the enthusiasm and hear the fans. It was a totally different tone than it has been in the past. I think you can't help but get excited as you watch that and see the speed and the enthusiasm. The players are all up for it and moving around. That up tempo is what I think people want to see."
(On changing the image of the organization in the offseason and not having the franchise quarterback present today) – "I can't deal with what's not there. I can only look and see what was there and I like what I saw. And we'll deal with that."
(On his message to the team yesterday) – "Well, I told them what I believed. You know, why I bought the team. What my vision was for it and tell them how excited I am. Really my position as an owner is to support the team and do everything we can to produce a winner. And letting them know that there is a tradition here in Miami. It's a great place to play. There's a responsibility both to the team and to the fan base, and the impact on the community. And just let them know a little bit just who I am. I thought it was good. Joe (Philbin) really encouraged it. As you know, it hasn't really been encouraged in the past. So it was kind of a new beginning if you would."
(On his commitment to General Manager Jeff Ireland for the long term) – "I'm committed to him. If I had any doubts, he wouldn't be here."
(On if Ireland is on the hot seat if the team doesn't make the playoffs this year) – "I mean, we take one year at a time. I think we have a great team here and that's what I'm looking at."
(On his impressions of David Garrard) – "I mean, I was introduced to him or he introduced himself to me and (he's) a very personable guy, feel very confident type of guy. He's been here before, let's put it that way and I think he adds an awful lot of assurance to the quarterback position. And he certainly is going to compete for the starting job."
(On establishing an identity for the team) – "Well, I mean, I think Joe Philbin really wants to bring back the tradition of Miami being a winning team. I think you can see the sincerity as a person and his work ethic and what his expectations are great. I don't think he's going to suffer anybody very much. He's a guy that's very serious about it and the way he's going about it, and the staff he's put together. And you can see how organized his practices are and how they are moving along. I'm really impressed with what he's doing. We've got to win games."
(On what he told the team about why he bought the franchise) – "I mean, I love sports. It was a real challenge. At the stage of my life, I still love challenges and I really want to bring a winning team to Miami, and be the best in class organization – have our impact on the field as well as the community."
(On the strengths of this team) – "I I think the one thing about football is it keeps on becoming a faster and faster game and I think this team is a much faster team, much faster paced team and I think they are serious about their business. And I think that with the up tempo nature of this offense that what it's going to be, which you could see it on the field today, get a feeling for that – that it's going to bring a lot of excitement to South Florida and I think it will translate into wins."
(On how much the Miami Heat winning a championship motivates him to do the same with the Dolphins) – "The Heat winning, I don't need to be motivated any more than I am to be very honest with you. I think it's great for Miami that the Heat does win, but, at the same time, South Florida is about football and I think fans will feel a lot better when the Dolphins are winning in the Super Bowl."
(On what he would say to fans who aren't convinced that the 2012 team is better than the 2011) – "First of all, come to the games and they'll see it. Come to preseason games or read what you guys write and what you see. I mean, it's pretty evident or listen to Joe Philbin. Things are pretty evident and you can feel it. People can talk the talk, but you can see that we're walking the talk and I think that's what's important. If fans feel that and see that, I think they're going to be very excited about that."
