Woman accused of killing man in Dania Beach hit-and-run, BSO says
A woman is in jail after the Broward Sheriff's Office said she hit a man with her car early Saturday morning in Dania Beach and left the scene.
BSO shared the news about 21-year-old Keila Maldonado's arrest on Sunday. Deputies said they were called to the scene along the 200 block of Sheridan Street just after 1:30 a.m. A man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was found lying in the roadway. BSO said he was declared dead at the scene by first responders.
The accident happened just east of U.S. One, right next to Pastor Edvard Legrand's New Bethany Tabernacle Church.
He said he was alarmed by the accident.
"These days, people don't care," Legrand said. "We don't see lives the same way, maybe you and I saw before. If you do leave, you don't care. If people care, they will stay."
And he has a message. He said, "Wherever you are driving, whether you are coming from the beach or you are just on the road, slow down just a bit. Slow down. Thirty-seconds can change your life and someone else's life also."
The arrest report said that detectives found an identification number on one of the debris pieces found at the scene. They said the car that was used was located on the second floor of the garage at Lexus of North Miami in North Miami Beach, after they say authorities received a call from someone at the dealership.
The report said Maldonado worked at the dealership and reportedly told an employee that she had taken a rental car from the dealership without their permission and she reportedly asked how much it would cost to repair damage on the vehicle.
The report said an employee asked her what happened and Maldonado reportedly said she had hit someone on a scooter. The report said a security manager secured the vehicle and an employee alerted BSO about the vehicle, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata.
The report said, "The suspect explained that on the previous day she took the vehicle from the dealership without their knowledge." Maldonado said she went to the beach with the car, the report states.
The report also said Maldonado said she drove to a nearby shopping plaza after the accident and watched paramedics show up and then she left the scene without talking to police.
