MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A young man aboard a cruise ship had to be air rescued over the weekend after officials said he choked on a piece of meat.

A GoPro camera captured a flight medic being lowered over a Norwegian cruise ship near Port Miami Saturday evening.

A young man, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, choked on a piece of meat and, at one point, emergency dispatchers reported that he was not breathing.

Attempts to transfer the cruise passenger from the ship to a rescue boat were unsuccessful—that's when Miami-Dade's chopper was brought in.

"The fire boat making its way out there felt that the seas were going to be too rough to do a ship-to-ship transfer of any patient," said Lt. Chris McCory of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The young man, as seen in the video, was hoisted into the rescue helicopter in a basket.

The patient was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. His condition is unknown.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told CBS4's MaryAnn Martinez that airlifting off cruise ships is necessary when an ambulance can't get the person to the hospital fast enough.
