Bicyclist Killed In Wynwood Hit & Run, Suspected Driver In Custody

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami Police have arrested 33-year-old Raymond Matthew, a driver who left a bicyclist for dead early Friday morning.

"The fact that he fled and didn't render aid is what makes this case criminal," Miami Police Officer Kenia Fallat explained.

The hit and run happened just before 3 a.m. at NW 1st Street and NW 20th Street.

"The man was pronounced deceased on the scene by Miami Fire Rescue personnel."

It's unclear how much time it took for someone to call 911.

"We got a good direction of that vehicle, and a direction of travel."

Shortly after, officers in the area spotted the vehicle and tried to get the driver to pull over, but he didn't stop right away.

"About 20 blocks later he came to a final rest, bailed out of the vehicle, and we apprehended him."

That driver so far faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.

"So, we formed a group, and we lobbied our senators, and our state legislature and our Governor, to please make it a stricter penalty if you hit a cyclist you are going to go to jail," Sue Kawalerski, Bike 305 manager said.

Tragically this is yet another bicyclist death for Bike 305 to track. It's a county-supported group advocating for bicyclists.

"Before a lot of drivers would hit a cyclist and they would get off scot-free, what the Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act did was make sure, number 1, if they kill a cyclist and they leave the scene of an accident they're going away for 4 years minimum period," Kawalerski added.

Miami Police have reason to believe the driver may not have stopped because he didn't have a license to drive.

"The fact that you remained on the scene could have changed this case altogether, perhaps that victim would be alive today," Ofc. Fallat added.

Police are still working to identify the victim and notify the next of kin.
