ATV Driver Killed In Westchester Hit And Run
WESTCHESTER (CBSMiami) - Surveillance tape obtained by CBS4 shows a deadly hit-and-run accident in Westchester on Sunday night that claimed the life of a young man.
The surveillance tape shows a silver Kia sedan heading eastbound on Bird Road and turning northbound on SW 94TH Avenue where it collided with a man driving an All-Terrain Vehicle. The driver of the Kia then sped off.
Pierre Orlando, who owns a Shell gas station, released the surveillance tape. He told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that he wanted to help the authorities capture the hit-and-run driver.
"You shouldn't leave the scene of such an accident," he said. "Some guy died and he should pay for what he did. It's sad. It's horrible. There is no other way to describe it. We need for people to come forward because the family of the man needs to know what happened and he has to pay for what he did. That is for sure."
"I saw the video," he said. "It shows the silver Kia going eastbound on 40th Street and making a left on 94TH Avenue and that's what you can actually see the motorcycle falling down."
"Why is so important to get this tape out there?" asked D'Oench.
"So people can identify who did this and get this guy," he said.
Orlando said if anyone knows anything about this crash, they should come forward.
"If they know anything and if they saw anything they should come forward because we don't want something like this ever happening again. I want to see this solved. It happened right in front of my business," he added.
The tape has a haunting image of the ATV skidding westbound along Bird Road after the accident. The Florida Highway Patrol says the person on the ATV was ejected and died. The have not released his name.
Friends of the victim who showed up at the scene did not want to comment but they said that he was just 21 years old.
The accident happened at 11:50 after people on Bird Road started celebrating the Miami Heat's finals-clinching victory over the Boston Celtics. It is not known if that was connected in any way to the accident and FHP has not released a more detailed description of the silver Kia Sedan.
The surveillance tape shows people running to help the victim.
Moments later, you hear the sounds of sirens on the tape as police and first responders arrive at the scene.
