Asteroid To Flyby Earth This Weekend

CAPE CANAVERAL (CBSMiami/AP) – Get ready for a celestial show this weekend, as a new asteroid is set to flyby Earth.

The 60-foot rock, called 2014 RC, is set to pass 25,000 miles over New Zealand. Do not be alarmed, it's a safe distance according to NASA. For perspective, 25,000 miles is one-tenth the distance between here and the moon.

A similar sized rock pierced through the atmosphere over Russia's Ural Mountains last year, causing considerable damage. However, 2014 RC does not pose a threat.

The space rock was discovered by astronomers in Arizona the night of Aug. 31.

Those who want to see the celestial body flyby will need a telescope.
