Aquatic Adventures Patch Reef Fishing Key Largo & Fishing Reports March 12, 2011

In this week's Aquatic Adventures we take you fishing on the Patch Reefs just offshore of Key Largo. Our captain, Kerry Wingo, has been fishing these parts for years. We had a great day of sight seeing and  catching reef fish. This was Melissa Fornabia's 2nd time fishing and she was like a kid in a candy store!

Capt. Alan Sherman - Miami-Dade

South Florida fishing continues to be outstanding and very exciting as the pictures that I have attached will attest to.

Since my last fishing report I have had charters inshore, offshore and in freshwater in the Everglades Conservation areas. The action has been non-stop to interesting to downright tough. The tough charters came during nighttime tarpon trips that the tarpon did not cooperate at all. If you have ever specifically targeted tarpon than you may understand if not let me explain that tarpon are very unpredictable and rarely dependable as was the case on recent tarpon trips.

Fishing inshore in South Biscayne Bay with two regular clients we braved blustery winds from the east that restricted us from fishing where I had intended. The Patch Reefs off Key Biscayne. Instead of getting beat up over the Patch Reefs we stayed in the bay where we could fish in comfort. After netting a live well of pilchards we headed out into the bay with a wind pushing up against a strong tide and managed non-stop action from jack crevalles, bluerunners, cero and Spanish mackerel using live pilchards under a Cajun Thunder float, on Hookup lures, free lined and on Rapala Flat Raps until a 30 pound barracuda moved in on us and ate a mackerel and lure resulting in our fishing coming to an end. We moved on and found small gag groupers and losing a large mystery fish before catching and releasing more jacks, gag groupers, small barracudas and then finishing our day with a small snook.

Fishing Offshore of Miami my clients and on days when not chartered, myself and my son Zach had pretty good action catching kingfish, Spanish mackerel, bonitos, blackfin tuna, dolphins, hammerhead sharks, cobia, remoras and a sailfish. On almost every offshore venture we had at least one shot at a sailfish all on live pilchards and Rapala X Raps and Flat Raps.

During a few nighttime tarpon charters fishing the outgoing tides we had non-stop tarpon action and no action at all having to settle for some action from small jacks, bluefish, snappers and a sea trout.

On a recent freshwater charter fishing in the Conservation Areas of the Everglades we had all day action from largemouth bass to 3.5 pounds, a few mudfish and bluegills while casting soft plastics and Rapala floating minnows with the floating minnows taking all of the 60 largemouth bass released that day.

The weather has been outstanding and should stay this way for some time. Catch that magic day and there is a good chance you will be bragging to your friends about all the fish you caught aboard the "Get Em" with Capt. Alan Sherman.

The gear my clients have been using during all of their charters on board the "Get Em" are Daiwa Advantage spinning reels, Key Largo Rods, Hookup lures, Mustad Hooks, Fins braided lines, Stren monofilament lines, Rapala artificial lures, Berkley Gulp baits, Cajun Thunder floats and I net my live baits with my Lee Fisher Cast net.

That's it for now!

Let's get out there are see what we can catch.

I have recently changed outboard engines on my 22' Pathfinder XL Tournament Edition Bay Boat. I had an opportunity to put one of the first Yamaha SHO 250 Four Stroke outboards on my boat and the difference has been just amazing. This engine has 25 more horsepower but carries 77 less pounds allowing me better hole shot while giving great cruising fuel efficiency. What more can a boater ask for?

I have been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new. Check out their web site at www.columbia.com

Capt. Kerry Wingo - Key Largo

Greetings fish fans. I don't want to sound cliché, but the weather is beautiful, wish you were here. How beautiful you ask? It's sunny with highs in the low to mid 80s and the fishing has been great. This past week we experienced most of what inshore fishing has to offer.

Out on the patch reefs we found lots of snappers, grunts, small grouper, blue runners, and some Spanish and cero mackerel. This is ideal fishing for the whole family. The bite is steady enough to keep the kids busy and it also provides a good chance of something for dinner. The snappers and grunts are very tasty.

The Oceanside flats have been hosting good numbers of bonefish as well as a tarpon here and there. As long as the water temperature keeps rising so will the chances of looking for that flats "Grand Slam". For those of you that aren't familiar with that term, it means catching a bonefish, a tarpon, and a permit all in the same day.

On the Florida Bay side of Key Largo, the waters close to home have been producing nice catches of mangrove snapper, a few redfish, an occasional snook, and some very nice sized sea trout. Sea trout spawn here almost year round, but in March and April, we see our share of the big females. These fish are great fun on light tackle.

Farther to west in the Flamingo area, we are still seeing good numbers of redfish, along with lots of trout, jacks, and ladyfish. Yesterday I guided Laura Cox from Lexington, KY and David Ralph from Coral Gables, FL. Laura had never been fishing before and I really love being part of someone's "first fish". They both caught ladyfish, jacks, and a few trout at the fist spot we went. After bouncing around to some different areas, we hit our last spot where David caught the biggest snook he has ever landed, and Laura finished off the day with a snook that weighed  10 pounds.  Way to go David and Laura! If you get down here and want to get out on the water, please give me a call.

Until next time, good tides and keep the Sun to your back. ><)))>

SeaSqaured Charters - Middle Keys

Wally and Linda Benson from Maskell NE, Okie Baughman and Petra Trevino from Indian Harbor Beach FL and Jerry and Mardelle Ludwig from Omaha NE enjoyed a bountiful half day of fishing with SeaSquared Charters.

We fished Hawk Channel and the Seven Mile Bridge and the crew caught their limit of mangrove snapper along with Spanish mackerel and two impressive kingfish - all on 12-pound test.

They cooked their mangrove snapper and some of the Spanish mackerel back at their condo in Coco Plum Beach . I smoked the rest of their mackerel for them - a whopping 33 pounds of Florida Keys deliciousness to feast on back in Minnesota!
