Sports Agenda For Thursday (12/8/11)

Big Story:
We're one day away from free agency madness starting in the NBA. The Marlins, whoa baby the Fish are handing out cash. The Panthers take on the defending Stanley Cup Champions. And why not, a little college football talk.
Running this agenda down harder than Shaq does a buffet, here we go.

NBA Free Agency/Miami Heat
Let's get the rules out of the way first.
The Miami Heat are right up against the salary cap, once they sign their first round draft pick.
That makes the Heat's moves very limited to start free agency.
Being above the salary cap will mean the Heat can only offer a mid-level exception contract of $3 million plus bonuses.
If the Heat are under the cap, then they can offer the full $5 million mid-level contract.
That's the difference between signing say, Shane Battier, and signing someone not in his league.
We know Mike Miller won't be amnestied, so they can't save salary that way.
We know they will not move any of the big three and still haven't re-signed point guard Mario Chalmers, though that is expected.
They obviously have a glut at power forward (Bosh, Udonis, Joel Anthony) so that could be a position in transition.
So let's look at some of the possibilities out there right now.
The first is a sign-and-trade for power forward David West. He's coming off major reconstructive knee surgery, so his appeal to the Heat is beyond me.
But, he could be moved through a three team trade that could allow the Heat to move enough pieces to sign their big target, Samuel Dalembert.
Sam has been the Heat's target for a while, but the question is can they free up enough money to sign him.
My gut tells me no, but every time I doubt Pat Riley he pulls the rabbit out of his hat.
The Heat could be willing to move either Joel Anthony or Udonis to give enough parts to make the trade happen.
The second possibility is the Heat could try to cut a deal with Shane Battier and use the remaining money to sign Kwame Brown.
Yes, I know he was a bust, but he had a great year last year in Charlotte, and with good role models in Miami, he could develop nicely.
And don't forget, he's nearly 7' and weighs around 260-270.
Past that, it's going to be rummaging around the bottom of the free agent bin.
Here's a fun one for you, the Pacers like West a lot and will make a run at him.
How about a sign-and-trade with three teams: the Heat send Udonis Haslem to the Hornets, the Hornets sign West and trade him to the Pacers, and the Pacers trade Roy Hibbert to the Heat.
Yeah, that ain't happening, but it's what makes the last 24 hours before free agency so much fun.
I'll be monitoring the potential moves all day long and especially following shane battier now that he tweeted out he has news to deliver today.

Miami Marlins:
Holy free spending madness Batman!
If you're trying to figure out what's been going on at the baseball winter meetings…here's what you need to know.
MARLINS. MARLINS. MARLINS. MARLINS. MARLINS. MARLINS….and MARLINS!
They've been after every good player with a pulse and after boosting the pitching staff yesterday, they're at it again Thursday.
The Marlins are still reportedly interested in Prince Fielder.
He's a beast of a hitter and when he makes contact, he launches bombs that would make the U.S. Air Force proud.
He's a huge upgrade over Gaby Sanchez, sorry, it's true.
Plus, you could package up Sanchez and someone else and go get more pitching to further bolster your rotation.
I've been pushing Fielder more than Pujols to people who would listen to me.
He's younger, just as good of a slugger, and still hasn't reached his peak potential yet.
You just have to keep him away from the all-you-can-eat buffet.
And plus, and I can't take credit for this line, but it's perfect (h/t to Jorge Sedano)
The Heat brought in a King, so why not let the Marlins bring in a Prince!
Past Fielder the Marlins still have a six-year deal offer out to C.J. Wilson.
I think that's a really bad idea and I hope he signs with the Anaheim Angels.
We'll see if the Marlins can reel in Fielder. Their pursuit of him has been quiet, but picked up in the wake of Pujols saying no.

Florida Panthers: (@ Boston Bruins, 7:00 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
If you haven't noticed, and based on the attendance, you haven't; the Panthers continue to lead their division and take their game to Boston Thursday night to battle the Bruins.
The Bruins are the defending Stanley Cup Champions and are currently leading the Northeast Division.
This is going to be a great matchup as Boston has lost only one game in their last 10. Florida is 6-3-1 in the same time span.
The Panthers follow up tonight's game with a game on Friday night at Buffalo.
They play Sunday night against New York Rangers and then return home for a four game home stand.
If you want to have some fun, just go out and watch a game.
It's still relatively inexpensive, and hockey is like baseball…you have to be there to really enjoy it.

College Football:
I'll be making my bowl predictions in the coming weeks, so here's my Heisman ballot, if I actually had one.
1. Robert Griffin, III – QB, Baylor
2. Trent Richardson – RB, Alabama
3. Andrew Luck – QB, Stanford
4. Tyrann Mathieu – CB, LSU
I know I have a southern bias here, but I have to laugh at the writers who said RGIII would get abused in the SEC.
Really?
So you're telling me Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Auburn would have destroyed him?
Please.
He's the best player and that's the bottom line.
