A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized Monday afternoon after he accidentally shot himself in the foot just west of Fort Lauderdale, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting was reported around 2 p.m. near the 600 block of Northwest 27th Avenue. Broward County Regional Communications received the call, prompting a response from BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

Deputies arriving on scene found that the young boy had been shot in the foot. Paramedics transported him to Broward Health for treatment. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, officials said.

Sheriff's investigators say the boy, who was being cared for by a family member, got a hold of an unsecured gun and accidentally shot himself.

No charges have been filed at this time.

The sheriff's office reminds gun owners that firearms should always be unloaded and stored in a locked storage container that isn't easily accessible to minors. They said doing so protects children and adults by preventing unintentional shootings like this one.
