Police Investigate Report Of Ice Cream Man Who May Have Come Too Close To School

INGLEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — School officials in Inglewood want to keep the ice cream man far away - or at least 500 feet away - from students.

Authorities were asking for the public's help Monday to identify a man in a blue van who sold ice cream to students at Woodworth Elementary allegedly in violation of a municipal code requirement that prohibits vendors from coming any closer than 500 feet to schools.

Lillian Grant of the Inglewood Unified School District said the ice cream vendor was peddling his goods last week on the 3200 block of West 104th Street and was "using his arm to motion the students away from the front of the school, where he is prohibited from selling ice cream, to a nearby area away from the school."

The driver stopped his van a short distance away from the campus and sold ice cream to several students before leaving the area, according to Grant.

While she says there was "no criminal intent" on the part of the vendor and that "students were not in any danger," police are investigating the incident in order to confirm the man selling ice cream is licensed in accordance with Inglewood municipal codes.

"While `stranger danger' is always a potential threat, this incident was not the case," Grant said.

Anyone with information on the blue van or the ice cream vendor was urged to call school police at (310) 680-5237.
