Police say that a man in a wheelchair was struck by a car and killed while he was crossing an intersection in Fullerton on Thursday evening.

It happened at around 10:50 p.m. near W. Commonwealth Avenue and Library Lane, according to Fullerton Police Department investigators.

Upon arrival, officers attempted life-saving measures on the victim but he was ultimately declared dead at the scene by paramedics with the Fullerton Fire Department. He has not yet been identified pending notification of next of kin.

Police say that the man in the wheelchair was crossing the intersection northbound while the traffic signal was red. He was struck by the driver of a gray Hyundai that was traveling westbound on Commonwealth.

The driver, a 41-year-old man from Fullerton, remained at the scene to cooperate with the police investigation. They say that he did not appear to be under the influence.

"Investigators did locate alcohol at the scene believed to belong to the pedestrian," police said.
