High Surf Expected At SoCal Beaches This Holiday Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Southern Californians flocking to the beach in search of relief from the high inland temperatures during Labor Day weekend will find swells as high as 8 feet.

CBS2/KCAL9 Meteorologist Rich Fields says a South Pacific storm and Tropical Storm Ileana off the Mexican coast will combine to bring a fairly large south swell to California beaches starting Friday and continuing over the holiday weekend weekend.

These swells will begin to build late Thursday, peak between Saturday and Sunday and gradually subside through early next week.

Six to 8-foot swells are forecast, with an increased risk for strong and dangerous rip currents at many Southern California beaches between Friday and Sunday, and possibly into Monday. Localized coastal flooding is also possible around high tide.

High tides will range between 5 and 6 feet through the weekend.

High temperatures and the long holiday weekend are expected to draw large crowds to Southern California beaches.
