Footage Captures Low-Flying Plane Accused Of Coming Within 20-Feet Of Group Of Surfers
DEL MAR (CBSLA.com) — A pilot may soon be grounded after allegedly being caught on camera buzzing surfers and swimmers at a San Diego beach.
Lifeguards videotaped a low-flying Cessna at Del Mar Beach, which at one point, allegedly came within about 20-feet of a group of surfers.
One lifeguard indicated that the pilot "hugged the coastline" for about three-quarters of a mile.
Pilots aren't legally allowed to come within 500-feet of any building, boat or person.
Adam Chase, a Del Mar ranger, sent the footage, along with a formal complaint, to the Federal Aviation Administration.
"Aircraft that fly over water have to stay a minimum of 500-feet away from any person, vessel, structure," he said.
The incident is expected to be investigated.
