California Board To Vote On Sewers For Malibu

MALIBU (AP) -- A California panel says scenic Malibu needs to clean up its act with sewers.

The State Water Resources Control Board voted 5-to-0 Tuesday in Sacramento to ban septic tanks from part of the town within nine years.

A regional water board proposed the ban last year to end decades of ocean pollution that has fouled famed Surfrider Beach and other areas.

The vote means the community of surfers and celebrities will have to install its first centralized sewer system.

The city incorporated in 1991 specifically to stop construction of a county sewer line because residents feared it would lead to massive development.
