Missing 22-year-old college student found dead in Big Bear Lake
San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department investigators found the 22-year-old man who had been missing since Saturday night, dead in Big Bear Lake.
Tanner Prentiss, a University of California, Santa Barbara student, and several friends rented a cabin at Big Bear Lake for the weekend and after going out for the evening, but detectives say that Prentiss did not return to the cabin.
He was last seen around 12:30 a.m. on May 17 on Village Drive near a area filled with bars and restaurants, according to the sheriff's department. They said he was possibly heading towards Big Bear Boulevard when he was last seen.
Authorities put out a missing persons report, hoping for the public's help to find Prentiss.
Following an extensive search by the sheriff's dive team, Prentiss' body was found in Big Bear Lake, near the Pine Knot Marina, at around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
"They had a helicopter flying over and they ... had on their little loud speakers saying ... they're looking for this person Tanner," said Deven Defontaine, a Big Bear resident who works on the lake.
Deputies spotted Prentiss' body in the water from the helicopter, and it was retrieved by a team of divers shortly after.
Sheriff's officials said foul play is not suspected in the death. They're conducting interviews and reviewing video to try and confirm how he ended up in the water.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tanner's family, friends and all those who are affected by his loss," SBSD said in a statement. " The family is requesting privacy as they navigate through this tragic incident."
