The key really is not waiting to find out if your root system is sufficient enough in providing proper nutrition to the health and stability of the tree. It is important to recognize that trees are alive and like any living thing they require proper nutrition to thrive and not become succeptible to disese and pest infestation. This involves the tree being able to access the nutrients through soil which is not compacted but mulched and well drained. It also requires knowledge of each species you have planted in your yard as all trees require different care. Look for change in foliage and early visible exterior signs. Consulting a knowledgeable arborist for an assessment is the best prevention method.
