'Smart' Mocktail Recipes

The bartenders at Berkley Bar showed us some "smart" cocktails during Thursday's segment. With the New Year, lots of people are focused on eating healthier, drinking less, and spending less. Because of that, they showed some easy mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails) to make at home as well as healthier cocktails that use fresh seasonal juices, authentic (non-artificial) sweet and sours, etc.

Here are two mocktail recipes:

Basil Cooler
1/2 oz Lime Juice
1 oz Grapefruit Juice
1/2 oz Simple Syrup
Soda Water
Basil Leaves
Ice

Pour lime juice, grapefruit juice and simple syrup over ice in a shaker glass. Add a leaf or two of basil before shaking. Shake ingredients for 20 seconds or so, to make sure the basil flavor is broken down in drink. Strain over fresh ice in a pint glass while layering in soda water. Never shake with a carbonated beverage always add after your beverage is shaken.

(Add 1 1/2 oz Gin for the cocktail version)

Pomegranate Mojito
3 Lime Wedges
6-8 Leaves of Mint
1/2 oz Simple Syrup
1 oz Pomegranate Juice
Soda Water
Ice

Add lime wedges, mint leaves and simple syrup together in a pint glass and muddle until mint is broken up and juice from the lime has been released.Add ice over your muddled limes and mint.

Add 1 oz of pom juice over the ice and shake. Shake for 20 seconds or so, to break up the mint flavor.
Pour back into pint glass while layering in soda water.

(Add 1 1/2 oz of Rum for the cocktail version)
