Travelzoon Hotel Review - Hotel Wilshire
Two Words -- Los Angeles. Also known as "La-La Land," Mecca to the filthy rich, where stars move to get spotted and soon-to-be stars go to "be discovered," scene to TMZ cameras and sky-rocketing salaries, and finally (and arguably the worst offense) some of the most annoying sports "fans" to ever call themselves "fans." The many fabulous reasons all walks of life flock to Los Angeles, are the same reasons this grounded girl avoided the city at all cost. But my pending wedding dress fitting and a bit of work meant I had to bite the bullet and take a trip to the City of Angels. Well folks, I am now eating my words and I undoubtedly have Hotel Wilshire to thank. Let's start from the beginning…
When you're visiting LA, three things matter: Location, location, and location. That's to say because of LA's size, you have to be strategic about where you stay to guarantee easy access to all the great shopping, entertainment, outdoor diversions and cultural attractions the city is rightly famous for. Bam, Hotel Wilshire. Little did I know this boutique hotel was smack-dab in the heart of it all. And I got sucked into the shopping, star-gazing, typical tourist attractions and outdoor adventures that were only a few minutes from the hotel. Access to and out of the Miracle Mile hotel was smooth and the staff was always willing to cater to my every need (which magically appeared when I checked in and felt "like I made it"). Honestly, I felt like I was home after being greeted by the well-trained valets and receptionists you seem to find at every Kimpton hotel. They just have a way of making everyone, no matter who they are or what they are looking for, feel comfortable.
I was upgraded to the Hollywood suite, which was one of the bigger rooms I've ever stayed complete with kitchen amenities, gigantic dining room area and lounge space. Not to mention the state-of-the art bathroom and a luxurious place to lay my head at night. Believe me, it was everything one would expect from a suite and more. Whether it was the panoramic views of the city that came complete with an unobstructed view of the infamous Hollywood sign, inviting bed resembling a plump cloud or the spread of fresh nosh foods and bottle of local red, I decided to stay in (way in) for most of the afternoon.
Needless to say I fell asleep and the bed turned to be even better than it looked. When I awoke, I needed food but had the raging appetite demanding that whatever it was, it had to be quick and easy. No Nobu and forget Fig and Olive. I read that the Hotel Wilshire had a rooftop pool with an almost 24-hour restaurant that featured delights from my favorite chef Eric Greenspan. Eric is both classically-trained and street-trained. For as quickly as he can turn out some Michelin star-worthy delicacies, he can throw together a dirty, finger-licking' good, hangover-curing thing of beauty that few dare to make a reality but always dream about eating in a late-night binge fest. One look at the menu, and I was in (way in again it seemed).
When I walked out onto the roof, it was like a scene out of a movie (how fitting) with the sunset and the still pool and the bustling cocktail scene. Don't get me wrong, Roof on Wilshire had the scene you'd expect here but it wasn't over-the-top or too much or too in-you-face. It was perfect and lovely. The cocktails they churned out were some of the best I'd ever had (please start with a Basil Explosion, it will change your life) and the food was even better. I kicked off my dinner with Fritto Misto and Riesling Steamed Mussels, and was pleasantly surprised after one bite. The dishes were simple but full of flavor and were so delicious, I found myself closing my eyes to fully-enjoy. And I did it folks, I ordered the Wilshire Grilled Cheese just because I could. Gruyere, date marmalade and roasted peppers on sourdough. WOW! Mind-blowing! But the capper was the Roasted Branzino, which (and I'm sorry folks) is purely indescribable. Anyone who is staying at the Wilshire Hotel, staying anywhere within 100 mile radius of the place or up for an adventure, go to Rooftop on Wilshire and have that exact same menu. Although, I have very good suspicions the whole menu is equally as intoxicating.
Of course I managed to visit all the attractions close to the hotel but the highlight for me was Hotel Wilshire hands down. Los Angeles is now one of the cities topping my destination list. Please do yourself a favor and book a trip to Los Angeles, not for the stars or the tourist attractions, just for an experience unlike anywhere else at Hotel Wilshire. They do it right and leave you with a story and experience you are dying to share with others.
