Woman Recalls Being Shot While Grocery Shopping In Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A grocery store security guard hit by gunfire is credited with saving lives, after a violent robbery attempt turned into a shootout in Dallas.
The incident happened outside the Minyard Food Store near the intersection of Hampton Road and Singleton Boulevard, in West Dallas.
Police explained that two, armed male suspects walked up to a grocery store manager and a security guard and tried to rob them as they were moving cash from the store's gas station checkout around 10:00 p.m. Two bullets hit the security guard in the upper torso, but he was able to return fire.
Friday morning, you could see the bullet holes left in the walls of the store.
Police say the gunmen knew the routine at the business where he injured four people with his gunfire. One of those victims, Gail Mitchell, was shot in her right arm as she shopped at the store Thursday night.
"I heard the shots. I thought at first it was firecrackers. But then it got louder, so I knew it was something different. By that time the front window shattered and everyone in the store started running towards the back," she said.
While Mitchell's arm will heal -- her heart is another matter. Mitchell said the seconds seemed like hours. "I was inside at the cash register…shots came in. I ran to the back. I was hit in the arm."
A manager with the private security firm said they are changing the practice of how money is retrieved from the grocery store gas station. Minyard general manager Bill Davidson said, "We're going to have armed guards pick up money from the fuel center."
In addition to the security guard and Mitchell, the assistant store manager was grazed by a bullet and another customer at the store was injured by gunfire. None of the injuries were life threatening.
As of Friday afternoon, police had made no arrests in the case.
