Woman Bit More Than 40 Times By Loose Dogs

DALLAS (CBS11) - A Dallas woman, fresh out of the hospital from a brutal dog attack, spent the Fourth of July inside away from the fireworks and barking dogs.

"I don't even want to go down the street," Tamika Batts said.

Last Tuesday as she was walking to the store in the Red Bird neighborhood, two pit bulls attacked Batts.

She said the dogs bit her more than 40 times. She spent the next four days in the hospital.

"I really thought I was going to die," she said.

While the two suspected dogs involved in the incident were picked up by animal services, many neighbors said they are far from being at ease.

Derrick Bealer said he won't go for a walk around the neighborhood with a golf club for protection from loose dogs.

"We really don't even want to sit outside," Bealer said. "When we do come out you have to look around and make sure that the coast is clear."

The City of Dallas has struggled all summer to get a handle on the stray dog issue in southern Dallas.

In May, Antoinette Brown was bitten more than a hundred times by a pack of dogs and died from her injuries.

The city is currently studying how to deal with loose dogs in southern Dallas.
