UNT Places Ban On Alcohol At Greek Life Events
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The University of North Texas has placed a ban on alcohol at all Greek Life events in response to an accident that occurred at a fraternity house last month.
The university made the announcement on Thursday and suggested the ban will continue "while the Dean of Students leads a task force to promote the responsible and legal use of alcohol."
Additionally, UNT Police have obtained warrants to arrest seven individuals for furnishing alcohol to minors. The arrest warrants are the result of an investigation into an accident at the Delta Sigma Phi house at 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 26, when a student was injured after falling over a stairway railing.
The investigation found that minors were provided alcohol at locations both on and off campus on Jan. 25 and 26.
"Furnishing alcohol to a minor is illegal, and so is the consumption of alcohol by minors," said Elizabeth With, vice president for student affairs in a statement. "When it comes to our students, UNT will not tolerate either and we are committed to help prevent it from happening."
The Dean of Students will lead the task force, which will include Greek Life students, chapter and campus advisors to Greek organizations, and faculty.
"With the creation of this task force we will be taking more aggressive steps to educate our students about the risks of underage drinking," said With. "And we are starting with our Greek community."
The ban extends to all Greek life events, both on and off campus. This includes parties, mixers and icebreakers, date parties, formals or any event involving a Greek student organization. Students 21 or older are not excluded from the ban.
