Mother, Five Children Hospitalized In Oak Cliff Explosion
OAK CLIFF (CBSDFW.COM) -- A mother and her five children were injured in an explosion and fire in Oak Cliff early Tuesday morning.
The single-story residence in the 1600 block of Champagne Drive is a total loss after the explosion, which occurred around 6:05 a.m.
The mother and her five children were all inside the residence when the explosion occurred. They managed to escape the home just after the initial blast.
They were transported to a local hospital. The mother is said to have suffered the worst injuries, while her children are expected to recover.
The father was at work when the explosion occurred. He returned to the home to collect what firefighters recovered from the debris.
"He's not taking it too good," says neighbor Howard Jenkins. "I mean this man just lost everything he owns. And the kids are at the hospital. One kid's legs burned. Mom's legs and arms are burned."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but a representative on scene says the explosion may have been caused by natural gas.
Neighbors report that they could smell gas hours before the fire began.
"As I'm walking back towards my patio to my back door, I could still smell it. I just didn't pay any attention," said one neighbor. "That was 10:30 last night. But at 6 o'clock this morning, there was like a big boom."
Atmos Energy is on scene and is investigating the incident.
