Random Act Of Kindness Touches Grieving Couple

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Waiting tables at the West Side Cafe, Kayla Lane crosses many paths. "I remember people. I'm really good at remembering people," she said.

Shaun and Debbie Riddle were surprised she remembered them this afternoon. They hadn't been by for a while. She also remembered their newborn daughter, Glory, and asked about her.

"They kind of looked at each other and were very silent," said Lane. "We said, 'Well, she passed away four weeks ago,'" said Shaun.

At nine weeks old, baby Glory never woke up from a nap. Her parents still don't know why.

"I'm like, 'Oh gosh, I made them remember!'" even though it's going through their minds all day, every day," said Lane.

At the end of the couple's meal, the waitress slipped them a receipt with a simple message.

"Your ticket has been paid for. We are terribly sorry for your loss. God Bless. - The West Side."

"I was just shocked," said Debbie. Shaun says he tried to refuse. "And, she said, 'No, no, don't worry. The company took care of it,'" said Shaun.

It was a small fib. A West Side Cafe manager confirmed, Lane paid for the meal out of her own pocket. She has a habit of picking up people's tabs.

"Like with military, firefighters," she admits. She usually manages to stay anonymous, too, asking another waitress to bring her the check and deliver a note in its place.

"I feel privileged that I'm able to do it," she said. Lane doesn't have a lot, but she says it really doesn't take a lot to make someone's day.

Debbie Riddle agrees. "We were grateful to see that there are good people in the world and that people want to help."
